Why it's so difficult for American K-pop groups to succeed - ft. A2K

In the past several years, K-pop labels have attempted to form their own American-based K-pop groups. While most have flamed out early in the concept stages, some major labels are now making a U.S. K-pop group a reality.

One major attempt is from Hybe and Geffen Records with their global group and show, Dream Academy.

The other major attempt is by JYP and Republic Records.

These two labels are pushing a new American K-pop group on a music reality show called A2K (America2Korea). The idea is finding Western talent and fusing them with the K-pop training system. While many int’l fans are excited of this new group, there are a lot of major obstacles facing American K-pop groups.

Can JYP’s A2K group, as well as other future labels, overcome these obstacles and break mainstream American audiences? We’ll follow the A2K group’s journey, break down these challenges and see if a Western group is viable.
